  • We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Research & Evidence Manager to join us on a 12 month contract basis. You will need to have a primarily quantitative background to support with commissioning and development of research to monitor our new Zathu brand, inform the development of Zathu and its products and understand its impact.

    The role will also support on report writing and donor reporting, and dissemination of research to internal stakeholders. You will work closely with the Senior Manager for Evidence to technically quality assure research, manage the team, capacity build the quantitative skills of other team members and support delivery of Zathu’s evidence strategy. You will also play a key role in informing media and change strategies and establishing evidence of outcomes for Zathu, which requires the ability to work across different teams in Girl Effect Malawi. From design through to dissemination, all research within Girl Effect requires cross-functionalssions and maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE);

    • Demonstrated skills in producing high quality, innovative and engaging research presentations and briefings for diverse audiences
    • Demonstrated skills in report writing and research dissemination
    • Interest in Girl Effect’s research areas of gender, youth, behavior change and media;
    • Excellent written and fluent spoken English.

    Desirable:

    • Experience with survey design and sampling
    • Experience with advanced quantitative analytical approaches, such as time series analysis structural equation modeling, hierarchical analysis, propensity score matching
    • Ability to communicate complex research concepts and findings to a wide range of audiences
    • Previous experience in research in the areas of brands, media and youth
    • Previous experience of research in a development setting, especially in Southern Africa
    • Experience in the design, implementation, analysis and reporting of quantitative research would also be an advantage working with colleagues across Gender, Brand, Girl Networks, Connectivity and Relationships teams.

    Key responsibilities:

    Leadership and management: 

    • Line manage evidence specialists, providing support and oversight for growth and learning of the team
    • Provide technical support to Malawi Evidence staff on research, monitoring and evaluation projects 
    • Manage and commissioning of external research agencies and oversee a portfolio of projects and ensuring that project deliverables are carried out on time.
    • Management of project budgets

    Research, monitoring and evaluation: 

    • Liaise with different teams to ensure that research is fit-for-purpose, girl-centered and appropriate for different cultural and social contexts 
    • Lead on assuring data management, analysis and reporting from quantitative studies to ensure that research meets the highest quality standards.
    • Ensure research effectively generates insights for different end-users across Gender, Brand, Girl Networks, and other Products 
    • Produce a range of reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders, including donors
    • Develop specific monitoring methodologies
    • Support on the development of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies
    • Conduct litterateur reviews and analysis of secondary data
    • Cary out quantitative data management, including data cleaning, deriving of scales, descriptive statistics and advanced analysis such as regression.

    Learning and sharing: 

    • Work closely with the Senior Evidence Manager to ensure engaging approaches to sharing of insights from the Evidence team. Design approaches to increase accessibility and uptake of data and findings
    • Build on findings to continually refine and develop Zathus measurement frameworks for better evidence and understanding of performance and impact.
    • Ensure that insights are accessible and promote research uptake for strategy development 
    • Present and share insights back with brand, gender creative and production teams across Girl Effect Malawi

    Skills and experience:

    Essential:

    • Degree in social sciences (sociology, economics, international development, psychology, epidemiology or similar);
    • Significant experience in social or commercial research.
    • Experience in quantitative research tool development, fieldwork, data analysis and reporting
    • Experience using SPSS;
    • Experience with cross-sectional survey data sets;
    • Previous experience implementing quantitative analysis methods, including Chi-squared, T-tests, ANOVA, ordinary least squares (OLS) regre
