The Pitch that Changed Tim Mayza’s Career and the Confidence it Brings
Sam Gaviglio pitched in 82 video games for the Blue Jays from 2018 to 2020.
He posted a 7-13 report, introduced by Toronto with a 5.06 Era out of the rotation and bullpen. Practically two yrs soon after his closing pitch for the Jays, Gaviglio now starts in the Dodgers’ farm procedure. But, he still decides video games for the Blue Jays—at minimum by association.
A sinker/slider swingman, it was Gaviglio who taught Tim Mayza the two-seam pitch that’s grow to be these a dominant weapon out of the Toronto bullpen. As throwing companions in the 2019 season, Gaviglio and Mayza tinkered and toyed with the southpaw’s new pitch, doing the job with coaches and catchers to morph the normal two-seamer into the arm motion and grip that now comprise the dominant delivery that modified Mayza’s job.
Mayza experienced been a four-seam/slider male his entire existence prior to hitters started to modify at the huge-league stage. In 2019, Mayza’s strikeout rate was the most affordable of his career and wander fee the maximum. Right after two seasons in an MLB ‘pen, hitters caught on to his pitch mix, laying off the slider for balls and capitalizing on the straight four-seamer.
“At the time, I was not lacking many bats or barrels,” Mayza said. “I wanted something that would run off a barrel, or just a unique kind of search.”
Performing with Gaviglio, bullpen coach Matt Buschmann, and catcher Danny Jansen, Mayza toyed with grips for a new weapon till he located a single that maximized regulate, convenience, and the depth he preferred. Pushing his outdoors finger just inside of the 2nd seam produced for peak two-seam nastiness and the lefty observed the diving arm-facet run that now enters Blue Jays online games in late innings.
At first, the two-seamer was just a wrinkle for Mayza, only working with it absent to righties, inside on lefties. Hesitant to ditch the two pitches that had carried him his whole occupation, Mayza also comprehended the problem of recognizing the two-seamer to both of those sides of the plate. If you overlook with the pitch coming throughout the plate, the ball can effortlessly operate back again into the coronary heart of barrels.

He little by little worked the new pitch in throughout the next 50 % of 2019 in advance of his time finished early, falling to the ground at Rogers Centre with an elbow injury that expected Tommy John surgery. The personal injury held Mayza off an MLB mound for 569 days, but he took the time off as a possibility to reset—rethinking himself as a pitcher with a clean slate. He was nevertheless the two-pitch pitcher he’d normally been, but all those two pitches transformed.
“Searching back and digging by way of numbers, the 4-seam didn’t generate a total ton of constructive outcomes and good opinions,” Mayza mentioned. “So what was there to shed?”
The effects had been rapid. Mayza failed to allow a one operate in 2021 spring instruction in his return from surgical procedures, and he concluded the period with the sixth-highest two-seamer charge in baseball. Catching the pitch, Jansen called it just one of the greatest in the game, and the .196 opponent batting common and -7 run price in 2021 appear to be to back up the claim.
“Once he received that pitch down,” Jansen reported. “After he type of located himself with that, he figured out who Tim Mayza truly is.”
With the amended grip and use, the lefty’s pitch is a sort of hybrid amongst a two-seamer and sinker. It has major horizontal operate high in the zone, like a standard two-seam pitch, and dives down below bats when he throws it small, like a sinker. With a really hard weapon to miss out on bats and barrels, Mayza can embrace Toronto’s bullpen philosophy of “finding hectic in the zone,” submitting the fourth-highest initial-pitch strike fee in baseball (80%). Despite various multi-inning outings, Mayza has just one particular visual appearance more than 14 pitches this year and his 3.11 pitches for each plate physical appearance is the cheapest on the crew.
“Get in and out of at-bats,” Mayza said. “Get in advance and put men absent when we have the chance.”
Just two years back, Mayza’s self esteem in his arsenal bottomed out. The strike amount was the most affordable of his profession, the walks peaked, and he just failed to have a weapon to pass up MLB bats. But now, with some support from Gaviglio and an arsenal reset, Mayza believes in himself and his two-seamer—rightfully so.
“Confidence is produced more than time,” Mayza said. “I’m a believer that outcomes breed self-confidence. When you see favourable comments and constructive benefits on a pitch, it would make you extra self-confident in throwing the pitch.”
