It’s not news that many nail polishes contain potentially toxic chemicals, but a recent study conducted by researchers at Duke University and the Environmental Working Group (EWG) finds that one chemical in particular could be lingering in our bodies—yes, our bodies can absorb chemicals through nail polish! Scary, right?
The ingredient the study focused on was Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP), a plasticizer, and suspected endocrine disruptor, which makes nail polish flexible yet durable, but there are some other toxic offenders too, including these predominant ones:
Dibutyl phthalate (DnBP) (plasticizer): Phtalates are endocrine disruptors that are linked to issues like hormone changes, diabetes, and thyroid irregularities
Toluene (suspends pigment in polish for even distribution): has a long list of effects from eye irritation to kidney and nervous system damage
Formaldehyde (preservative): A known carcinogen
Thank goodness there are plenty of toxin-free nail polish brands to choose from these days. I featured some of my faves (including Piggy Paint, Pacifica, and Ella + Mila) on my latest segment on KATU’s “Afternoon Live” – take a peep ↑! xx
